Simplifying Medicare for You

Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, or those under 65 who may qualify because of a disability or another special situation. Medicare helps millions of American seniors and disabled individuals cover some of their health care costs. Medicare is individual insurance and doesn’t cover spouses or dependents.

  • Am I Eligible for Medicare?

    You are eligible if:

    • You are a U.S. citizen or a legal resident living in the U.S. for at least five consecutive years.
    • You’re 65 years or older, or under 65 and have received Social Security disability benefits for 24 months.
  • When Can I Enroll in Medicare?

You can enroll starting 90 days before your 65th birthday. If you’re receiving Social Security benefits, you will be automatically enrolled in Parts A and B. Otherwise, you’ll need to sign up at socialsecurity.gov or contact your local Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board office.

At this point, you can explore enrolling in:

    • Medicare Advantage Plans
    • Medicare Supplement Plans
  • What Happens If I Work Past Age 65?

You may be able to delay enrolling in Medicare without penalty if you have creditable employer coverage. Speak with your employer’s benefits administrator to confirm your options and ensure your coverage is creditable.

    • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): This 7-month window includes the 3 months before your 65th birthday, your birthday month, and the 3 months after.
    • Annual Enrollment (Oct. 15 – Dec. 7): Review or change your plan for the following year.
    • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (Jan. 1 – Mar. 31): Switch to a different Medicare Advantage Plan or return to Original Medicare.
    • Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs): Available if you retire, move out of your plan’s service area, receive Extra Help, or experience other qualifying life events.
  • How Can a Medicare Advantage Plan Have a $0 Premium?

Private insurance companies partner with the Federal Government to administer Medicare Advantage Plans. These partnerships allow insurers to offer additional benefits, such as dental, vision, or hearing, often with low or no monthly premiums.
